Heijmans has been awarded the contract to renovate the Heerhugowaard prison. The renovation will start in January 2027 and is expected to take around 4.5 years, with completion scheduled in mid-2030. The contract is worth € 83 million for Heijmans. The contract follows a European tender by the Central Government Real Estate Agency, which carried out the tender on behalf of the Dutch Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI).
Works
Various buildings at the Heerhugowaard prison are now around thirty years old and require renovation and modernisation, which includes making the technical installations in the buildings more sustainable. In addition, Heijmans will refurbish the entrance and office building, creating a new entrance area, a new visitors’ area, improved staff facilities and a modern medical service. The works will take place while the facility remains in use, and operational safety will remain a key priority during the project.
Heijmans has previously completed projects involving the construction and maintenance of secure facilities, such as the prisons in Leeuwarden, Nieuwersluis, Ter Apel and Zwolle, as well as the courthouse in Amsterdam.
Sustainability
Heijmans will apply a range of solutions for the renovation, in line with its strategic pillars of Sustainability (new window) and Producibili (new window)ty. For example, it will use modular, prefabricated shaft modules for the various cables and pipes in the building. Heijmans will also reuse the lighting fixtures and convert these to LED technology.
